News agency Reuters made an announcement today that Pioneer’s DJ division has been sold to financial organization KKR Co LP for as much as 550 million dollars (which is around € 424 million euros).

The reason
Pioneer Japan had been hinting that it wants to focus more on its core business for quite some time now. An important fact is that a mixture of different products don’t fit the new vision of the company. The automotive branche is very appealing to them in particular. Pioneer HiFi will be sold to Onkyo, while Pioneer DJ while go to an organization that offered a lot of money for it.

Furthermore Pioneer says that the company should invest further in the DJ-branche, if it wants to keep expending and evolving in the current market. Pioneer would rather invest this money in the automotive market where they see lots of opportunities. That’s why they’ve chosen to reject the DJ-branche of Pioneer to a different investor. But Pioneer wants to remain somewhat in control, so they’ve kept a scarce 15% of the shares.

Pioneer’s DJ vision
The big question for us and you is of course: What will happen with Pioneer? Will the investors look even more critical to the market and launch their products based on that? Will they step back and await, or will they become true ‘pioneers’ again?

What is Pioneer going to do?
Like we said before, Pioneer is going to focus on the automotive branche. That means they’ll keep on producing car radio’s, navigation systems, subwoofers and car speakers. But you as a consumer don’t have to worry about the take-over. Pioneer DJ will start by becoming an entire seperate organization and from March 2015 they’ll start to mix it up with the new owners.
